Steps to Enroll for International Transfer Students

Below you will find our steps to enroll for international students who are transferring from another college or university. If you have any questions about your next steps, please contact the Welcome Center at 309.345.3500 or welcomecenter@sandburg.edu

  • Complete and submit a free online application.
  • Once your application is received, you will be provided with an updated admission decision within 2-3 business days.
  • In order to view your checklists, which provide your next steps, you will be required to accept your offer of admission.

Tips and Tricks

  • International Supplement:
    • Select "Yes" when asked if you currently have or plan to have a valid passport from another country prior to enrollment and/or will you be in need of a student visa.
  • Academic History:
    • Home schooled means that you were educated at home instead of attending school. If you attended school, select "No" when asked if you were home schooled during high school.
    • The GED is a high school equivalency exam that is typically administered in the United States and Canada. If you did not take the GED, enter "No" when asked if you received a GED.
  • Academic Institutions:
    • Enter "990000" as your Institution and click on "International School" when it appears.
    • You do not need to edit the CEEB, Country, City, or State to match your high school/college/university's address.

Step 2: Apply for an I-20

Required Documents
International students requesting admission and issuance of a Form I-20 must provide:
  • A financial statement verifying the ability of the student or the student’s sponsor to meet all educational and living expenses for one year while attending Carl Sandburg College.
    • This must be accompanied by a letter or bank statement dated within six months of the start of the entry term you've applied for.
    • Financial support of approximately $21,000 (USD) is needed per year.
  • Official transcripts from the U.S. college or university the student is currently attending.
  • A photocopy of the student's current passport.
  • Copy of the student's current F-1 visa.

For students whose native language is NOT English are required to complete one of the following:

  • Take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and earn a score of 68 on the Internet-based exam or 520 on the Paper-based exam.
    • Official test results must be sent directly from ETS.
    • Scores must be valid at the time of application for English proficiency purposes.
  • Submit official transcripts from an accredited United States college or university showing successful completion (‘C’ or better grade) of a college-level writing course and 6 hours of college-level academic course work requiring reading.
  • Submit official SAT score with an Evidence Based Reading and Writing sub-score of 480 or higher or an official ACT score with an English sub-score of 20 or higher.
    • Scores must be valid at the time of application for English proficiency purposes.
  • Additional entry requirements may be required for Limited Enrollment Programs.

STEP 3: PROVIDE COURSE PLACEMENT DOCUMENTATION

In order to register for classes, students must meet one of the following three requirements for both Math and Reading.

Send Transcripts
  • Send official or unofficial high school/college transcripts from all institutions attended, or high school equivalency exam results (GED/HiSET), which show sufficient coursework for college placement
    • Transcripts can be sent to transcripts@sandburg.edu
    • Note, college credit will not be granted from an unofficial transcript 
    • Course Placement Documentation - Math
      • Complete Geometry, Algebra I, and Algebra II with a grade of C or higher
      • Complete an approved Transitional Math course with a grade of C or higher
    • Course Placement Documentation - Reading
      • Complete the equivalent to Sandburg's Freshman Composition or Rhetoric I and six hours of college-level academic coursework requiring reading, with a grade of C or higher at an accredited United States College or University
Send ACT/SAT Scores
  • Send official ACT/SAT scores directly from the testing agency (ACT or College Board) which meet our minimum score requirements. Note, scores must be from an ACT/SAT test that was administered within the past five years.
    • Course Placement Documentation - Math
      • ACT Mathematics Sub-Score: 22 or higher
      • SAT Mathematics Sub-Score: 530 or higher
    • Course Placement Documentation - Reading
      • ACT English Sub-Score: 19 or higher and ACT Reading Sub-Score: 20 or higher
      • SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Sub-Score: 480 or higher
Sit for Accuplacer Placement Testing
  • Sit for placement testing (Accuplacer) and meet our minimum score requirements
  • You can sit for placement testing (Accuplacer) once you arrive on campus, or you can contact our Testing Center Coordinator regarding the possibility of virtually proctored placement testing.
    • Note, we will not administer a virtual session of Accuplacer until your visa has been granted.

Accuplacer Placement Test Overview

An eighth-grade reading level as demonstrated by a standardized test approved by Sandburg is required for admission into developmental and credit classes.

  • This untimed assessment test covers reading and math and will determine the level of classes you may begin.
  • We recommend that you prepare for this test prior to taking it. Practice tests and sample questions are available here.
